Majohe School
The children are very friendly and really enjoy the volunteers. The MOP school is in an area that is about an hour bus ride west of the Dar Es Salaam airport to Gongola-mboto, then a mini-van bus ride to the end of the line, then a 1.5 kilometer walk through some pretty deep sand. Majohe is very sandy and the school grounds are thick sand. In 2007, the school was only nursery and primary level. Secondary school is planned but the school needs to be registered with the government. Several things need to happen for this to occur. They need a toilet facility and it is in the process of being built but they need funds. Currently, a MOP volunteer board member lives next to the school and volunteers his home toilet for the children. The school needs a source of water so a well must be dug, a pump purchased, and electricity hooked up to run it. The teachers are all currently not certified teachers and the government requires certified teachers. They have no university training, only secondary school training. The school needs to be able to afford certified teachers and hire them to become certified. They must have desks for all the children. The school only has about 12 desks that hold three children each. The school is in desperate need of textbooks, teachers manuals and resources, school supplies for the children and teachers. Students need uniforms and shoes. Orphans need funds to have these items plus school books and supplies. Some of the children have AIDS.
School is Monday through Friday but only until about noon on Friday as Friday is a Muslim holiday and school is dismissed.
